“Many Queens” is a portrait series in collaboration with the Indian NGO Payana from Bangalore. The series features 6 powerful transgender women in all their charisma and romance, with diverse work profiles who defy common societal clichés and successfully carve a niche for themselves in their respective fields.

Through these 6 personalities, the project aims to encourage a space for sexual minorities to feel free from stigma and discrimination and get the well-deserved opportunity to develop their individual capacities, as well as to find a way to fashionably express themselves.

Despite the landmark judgement of recognising the third gender by the Supreme Court of India in 2014, transgender individuals continue to suffer from discrimination and social stigma. Many refuse to disclose their past due to fear of losing their jobs or of being judged. Many are refused jobs in public and private sector companies due to their past professional choices or living conditions. These photos hope to set examples for those who have felt hopeless, discriminated, rejected and wronged. These photos are to prove that they can be the king or the queen in their own chosen field of work.
